I read a great book recently by Sally Clarkson called "The Mission of Motherhood." It is a very challenging and encouraging book for moms, especially stay at home moms. She also has many good ideas for creative ways to teach and model godly living into your home. One idea I really liked was having a mission night.
Last week we had our first mission night. Once a month we are going to choose a country to be our theme for mission night. We will eat their food, learn about their customs and ways, and talk about ways we can pray for those people. Our first mission night was for China. I made egg drop soup, sweet and sour pork, and beef chow mein. During dinner, we talked with Kate, Marilee, and Burke (my niece and nephew) about China. My niece, who is 6, especially caught on as we discussed how Christianity is illegal there and we must pray for those Christians. After dinner, the girls colored pictures of traditional Chinese clothes and a picture of the country with their Aunt Lee while Trey and Burke played Chinese ninjas in the living room. I cleaned up and made some rice pudding for dessert.
Overall, it was such a meaningful evening for us. Through her years of teaching, my mom has collected different artifacts and pieces from various countries. While I'm home for Christmas she is going to help me go through the things she has so we can use them in the coming months for our mission nights. I wanted to share this idea in case someone else might want to give it a try in their home. Merry Christmas!
